| | HISTORY: Old Alcatraz Light, built in 1854 off the coast of San Francisco, |
| | became the first lighthouse on the West Coast. The structure was a two-story |
| | California cottage with the tower in the center. It was outfitted with a fixed Third |
| | Order Fresnel lens, which was later replaced with a flashing Fourth Order lens. |
| | Often the thick San Francisco fog rendered the light ineffective. A hand-rung fog |
| | bell was installed. Old Alcatraz was damaged in the 1906 San Francisco |
