Its beacon guides mariners within the hazardous shoals of Shackleford Banks, a

rendezvous point for Blackbeard the Pirate. Its light, visible for 19 miles, is 150'

above the ground.

Situated half-way between Cape Henry and Bodie Island, this tower is outfitted

with a First Order lens that flashes every 20 seconds. Close to a million

unpainted bricks were used in its construction.
