HISTORY: Admiralty Head, 1903

Whidbey Island, Washington

Located in Ft. Casey State Park, this brick and stucco structure marks the

entrance to Puget Sound, along with Point Wilson Light. The original was

built on Whidbey Island in 1861.

HISTORY: Old Alcatraz Light, built in 1854 off the coast of San Francisco,

became the first lighthouse on the West Coast. The structure was a two-story

California cottage with the tower in the center. It was outfitted with a fixed

Third Order Fresnel lens, which was later replaced with a flashing Fourth

Order lens. Often the thick San Francisco fog rendered the light ineffective. A

hand-rung fog bell was installed. Old Alcatraz was damaged in the 1906

San Francisco earthquake and was eventually torn down. [Lighthouse Depot]
